Why Are Dentures Important?

Why Are Dentures Important?

Why Dentures are Crucial to Oral Health.

Dentures are a prosthetic apparatus designed to replace natural teeth but also to preserve healthy oral conditions. While dentures have man cosmetic benefits some of the most important advantages are hidden beneath the gums. In order to understand why dentures are important for oral health we must dive into a mini anatomy lesson.

The mouth is a complex network of muscles and bone that maintain balance with your teeth. This means that while healthy gums are key to healthy teeth, healthy teeth are also key to healthy gums and bones. When you suffer from tooth loss, it can start a chain reaction that leads to generally declining oral health. Several missing teeth not only put strain on the surrounding teeth by increasing the force of impact between them while chewing but it also begins the process of gum and bone loss in the area.

Partial dentures protect the remaining teeth from wearing down unevenly when some teeth are lost. Dentures also preserve the jaw bones and gums themselves. The teeth are locked into the bone through a web of proteins and collagen called the periodontal ligament. When there is no longer a tooth in the area, the ligaments loosen and slowly dissolve. Without teeth creating tension and pressure, the mandible (lower jaw bone) will enter a process called resorption where the bone itself begins to dissolve.

Losing just a few teeth can lead to catastrophic tooth loss because as gums and bones degrade from a single missing tooth, other teeth will get looser. The remaining teeth will also suffer from damage due to the increased wear and gum recession. For this reason we recommend getting some form of long term tooth replacement as soon as possible. Here at Beautiful Smiles our core mission is to facilitate oral health and meet cosmetic goals that work for you. To get a free consultation about how we can help you resolve oral issues before bone resorption develops, contact us now!

The Pros and Cons of Implant Dentures

Pros and Cons of Dentures

When it’s time to get dentures or replace an old pair it is always worth considering all the options. Implant dentures are the latest in state-of-the-art oral solutions but both traditional and implant dentures have their benefits and drawbacks. To break down the pros and cons of both implants and traditional dentures we must first start with an understanding of how they work and how they differ.

Traditional Dentures

Traditional dentures are likely what you are most familiar with. They get a lot of representation in movies and pop culture, usually spotted either flying out of someone’s mouth or sitting in a glass on a nightstand. While dentures will seldom come flying out as they do in movies, certain foods can be more difficult to chew with traditional dentures than with implant dentures.

How they work:

Traditional dentures rely on suction to stay in the mouth. So while the upper denture relies on the suction created between the denture and the pallet to form a stable bond; the smaller amount of surface area on the lower arch can, for some, decrease lower denture stability. While lower dentures are very comfortable and versatile, because of the decreased suction some people struggle with hard foods like apples and fiddly foods like lettuce. Many people mitigate this instability by using a denture bond or glue, like Fixodent. One of the main perks of implant dentures is you will never have to use glue of any kind. Partial lower overdentures have a lot more options and grip in the mouth as the remaining teeth are used to attach the partial denture to the mouth. This is typically done using either a plastic or metal base that is customizable over time.

Much of the variation in experience with traditional lower dentures comes down to bone structure and or bone loss. The amount of bone under your teeth contributes greatly to the fit of any denture. There is no way to know the structure of your bones without a full exam, so if you are curious about your options, give us a call at (425) 487-1551. Bone loss in your mouth can come from many sources but one common one is tooth loss. Without teeth to hold up the bones start to decay and diminish over time.

Pros:

  • Quicker start to finish
  • No surgery required
  • Suitable for every patient
  • More affordable
  • Non-invasive

Cons:

  • Not as stable
  • May need adhesive
  • May be difficult to chew certain foods
  • Food can get stuck underneath

Implant Dentures

Implants are incredibly stable because they attach to posts that are surgically inserted and bonded to your bone. This allows your implant denture to function like natural teeth where we can guarantee your teeth will never fall out or slide around while chewing. Implant dentures are also incredibly discreet as they allow you to eat anything with ease.

While all this sounds amazing, there are some drawbacks to implant dentures as well. The main two downsides are the surgical aspect and the cost. Because implant dentures essentially become a part of your body; they require oral surgery to anchor the implants to your bone. Like any surgery implants also require time to heal so you can expect to wait six months before the final implant denture is safe for you to wear.

The six months are crucial because they allow time for your bone to grow around the implant and anchor it into place. During this time you will wear a normal removable denture over the healing implants. In six months we will attach abutments to your implants and your denture. At this point, you will be able to click your implant-denture into place and proceed as normal. The abutment attachment is easy, painless, and quick but the healing time is essential to forming a bond between the implant and bone that is strong enough to hold your denture in while you eat whatever you like.

The Cost

The only other downside to implant dentures is the cost. Implant dentures cost more for two main reasons. One is the surgical aspect. Surgery is always pricey so adding on an operation does impact the overall cost. Depending on the case this medical procedure can involve placing anywhere from 1-6 implant posts and bone grafting if there has been bone loss. The cost of implant dentures is also due to the heightened technology. Abutments and implant posts are designed and customized to create the clip-in function of implant dentures after healing.

The cost is also impacted by the necessary transition from traditional to implant dentures. As mentioned above, will will make you a traditional denture to wear while your implants heal.  After six months we will either fasten abutments to your overdenture if possible or create a new denture with places for the abutments to attach.

The Takeaways

While it is costly and requires some patience, implants are a much sturdier and long-lasting solution to tooth loss. Patients love the versatility and simplicity of eating anything they please without discomfort or embarrassment.

Pros:

  • Easy to chew
  • Very stable
  • Comfortable
  • Can eat anything with them

Cons:

  • More expensive
  • Surgery required
  • Not suitable for every mouth
  • More costly
  • Healing time

How Are Dentures Made?

What goes on in a denture lab and why it matters.

Historically

Modern technology has drastically improved upon ancient dentures but the idea itself is nothing new. Astonishingly, humans have been replacing missing teeth for nearly 3,000 years. Relics of dentures have been found in ancient Egypt and Italy as early as 700 BCE. Back then, dentures looked and felt very different but the idea and goals have remained the same. These antique dentures were made from real teeth or carved bone that was attached to the remaining teeth using wire. As one could expect, these early dentures were likely both difficult to eat with and uncomfortable. In ancient Maya, pieces of carved bone and stone were shoved into vacant dental cavities, which in good cases, were absorbed by the jaw bone itself. This remarkable invention demonstrates the very first dental implants. While this is an amazing feat for the era and perhaps better than missing teeth, let’s just say, we’ve come a long way.

Modern Materials

Over the past 3,000 years, many things have changed, including the way we craft and sustain tooth replacement options. While dentures may look similar to some ancient models, they feel and function much differently. Here at Beautiful Smiles Denture Care, we use IPN Portrait to craft our dentures which is an incredibly durable American-made material that perfectly mimics your natural teeth. IPN is unique in two ways, the first being its potent strength. IPN Portrait has four times more bonds than typical acrylic teeth. Each bond ensures the longevity of the denture as well as the teeth themselves. Secondly, IPN Portrait teeth have an incredible color-matching technology that involves five color planes on each tooth. The darkest being at the root of the tooth descending in a soft gradient to translucence at the tip. While this sounds a little odd, it mimics natural teeth perfectly guaranteeing a flawless and undetectable denture. It also allows the teeth to blend in with your natural smile in a partial denture. Here at Beautiful Smiles, we pride ourselves on perfectly matching your prosthetic teeth to your natural ones, allowing for absolutely seamless partial or total dentures.

The Process

The process begins when you come in for your consultation and express to us your unique tooth replacement needs. Our denturist will asses your mouth and then take a mold of your teeth and bite. This mold, made of sodium alginate, hardens into a workable guide for our denture technicians. Whether you need one tooth or an entire set this mold will help us craft the most natural-looking and seamless smile. Michael Salehi, our experienced denturist, will go through a series of colors and shapes with you to find the teeth that can align your smile most closely with both aesthetic standards of perfection and your personal preference.

After this fitting, our technicians go to work. First, we will pour your impressions with stone to create a working frame for your denture. Then our experienced technicians begin crafting the temporary wax mold to hold your new teeth. At your next appointment, you will try on this wax mold to ensure you like the look of your new smile and everything fits before the final denture is set. Next, your denture arch is crafted by hand and on-site. We use the strongest and highest quality denture material on the market during the final construction. On your final appointment, you will try in the finished denture and any uncomfortable spots will be adjusted by hand until it fits like a glove.

What makes Beautiful Smiles Denture Care Unique?

We are lucky enough to have been rated a top provider by Seattle Met every year since 2011. We attribute this to our unique in-office lab and our dedication to high-quality dentures and patient satisfaction. At some offices, dentures are sent out to a lab which means increased wait times and a limited ability to adjust the fit of your denture. Not only does this limit the aesthetic specificity but it means adjusting both the temporary and finished product can take exponentially longer. Here at Beautiful Smiles, we can have your finished product ready in days rather than weeks. Our in-house technicians and denture specialists ensure it fits seamlessly at your final appointment. Unlike the out-of-office labs, we can adjust the fit as many times as it takes to get that perfect fit in just a one-hour appointment. Sometimes a denture needs to be adjusted five or six times and while in our office that only takes about twenty minutes, at a send-out denture clinic this could take weeks or even months. We care about your comfort above all else and are dedicated to taking the time to get it just right.

Are Snap-in Dentures Right for You in Bellevue?

Snap-in Dentures bellevueWhen it comes to resolving your concerns about loose or missing teeth, dentures are often a popular choice. They fill in any missing teeth, they can be matched to any natural teeth you get to keep, and they’re easy to care for. There are several kinds of dentures though. Many people enjoy their snap-in dentures because of the many benefits they offer over other models. Get the details here.

You Want Secure Dentures

Instead of dealing with dentures that slide around or get painful food particles stuck underneath, choosing snap-on dentures can avoid both of those concerns. The dentures sit on implant screws to keep them stationary until you take them out.

You Want Removable Dentures

If taking your dentures out to keep them clean is something you’re comfortable with, snap-on models allow you to do that. You get the benefit of dentures that are locked in place but can also be released and freshened up as needed.

You Want Dentures That Last

With snap-on dentures, you can feel confident that your dental appliances will be in great shape and help you look and feel your best for more than five years. These are relatively low-maintenance dentures, making them easy to wear.

What Dental Procedures Might You Need Along with Dentures in Bothell?

dentures in bothellSome patients need additional dental work to prepare for dentures in Bothell. While it’s not always common, it can make the process of getting fitted for dentures easier and make wearing them more comfortable. Here are a few types of specialized treatments your dental professional may recommend.

Tooth Extractions

Some dental patients have already lost several teeth by the time they decide it’s time for dentures. Other patients need to have teeth removed so the dentures can replace them. Your dental care professional will do an exam to see whether any extractions need to be done and discuss with you how long you’ll have to wait–if at all–between getting teeth pulled and getting your dentures.

Bone Shaping

Dentures require the support of healthy jawbones to fit you well. In cases where you have an overgrowth of bone, there may be some reshaping that needs to be done to get the best fit and function.

Gum Shaping

Like having good bone structure, you also need strong gums to support your dentures. Your dental care professional will examine your gums and see if there are any irregularities that could cause you pain or loose dentures.
